birthdays and anniversaries

7 years ago i turned 18 in chicago. november also happens to be the anniversary for This American Life. the year of my 18th birthday was This American Life's 5th anniversary. Ira Glass and others toured the country in celebration, ending in chicago. it sold out quickly, but i was determined to get in. so i stood outside the theater holding one finger up waiting for someone with an extra ticket to sell. barely legal, i shelled out much more than i should have to celebrate my birthday with their anniversary.

7 years later, i am in new york city and so is This American Life. they replayed that chicago performance tonight on WNYC. as i listen, i can't help but reflect. this year i turn 25 and they turn 12. and this week i travel from nyc to pgh to chi for Thanksgiving. it seems appropriate.

a good day

i spent 5 hours today reading cover to cover the biography of a radical cataloger at the nypl (new york public library) for a paper soon to be due. it was incredibly satisfying. not just to sit in that great hall, but to read a book cover to cover for the first time in one sitting. my walk to the subway took me through grand central station- another great hall. at home i devoured a slice of thin triangle cut pizza and pounded out a paper in response to an article. i have tiger balm on my right wrist now. the tendons ache from writing and typing, but the pain is worth the satisfaction of such a productive day.

the month in review >> nyc bites back

it suddenly hit me while driving though the lincoln tunnel that i am really doing this. the music was thumping, my heart was racing, and my left tail light was out. i don't remember much else.

a little over a month ago i packed the remainder of my life into the back of a vw gulf and headed back east after a 7 year midwest interlude which resulted in the foundations of my now young adult life. after paying my fines and dues to saic and fmnh i figured it was time to make something of my skills. so, i'm getting my mlis and living out the dream.

a series of observations cataloged by the passing of time >>
01. mosquitoes on the east coast love me and my apartment.
02. regular coffee means with cream and two sugars- they look confused when you order it black.
03. i could not have done this without the kindness and guidance of friends. thank you all.
04. happy hour is a new york city godsend.
05. the cyclone at coney island will cost you an additional $4 if you want to ride again, but they'll cut you a deal if 2 people go on their second ride for $5.
06. i didn't shoot out the star, but i did watch the human blockhead hammer a nail up nose at the freak show.
07. maine is only 5 hours away and takes 3 states to get to.
08. the mosquitoes in maine and worse than in brooklyn.
09. moxie, lobster roll, the beach, whiskey and a campfire - simply new england perfection.
10. ikea in jersey on a saturday is hell.
11. you can take a ferry to an island that used to be a fort. it's fun to bike around there and then wonder around the east village looking for dinner.
12. graduate school is amazing. i'm finally with my people and things feel like they are falling into place.
13. it's easy to start a band with three other future librarians -- the shift -- now we just need to practice.
14. people dress pretty sharp in this city. more polished. less beige. tailored.
15. my first gallery opening involved a performance by the swiss graffiti robot.
16. the sound of the ice cream truck though quaint at first, is actually very distracting when you're trying to read Buckland.
17. it takes approximately four days for mail to go between new york and chicago.
18. don't think you can return home without people finding out. it wasn't intentional, just overwhelming. i've learned my lesson.
19. i think the mosquitoes are gone. at least from my apartment.
